The United States of America was founded by a tax revolt, so it should be no secret why Americans hate those pesky income deductions. Too bad though, because they are what make this country worth living in.
Letting the Bush tax cuts expire is perhaps the most fiscally responsible thing our government could ever do. Taking it a step further, the government would be well-served to at least entertain the idea of raising taxes on those who have the most to give.
This planet has finite stores of energy and resources, and has finite room for expansion and growth. It may be a bit outlandish to talk about a space economy in terms of the Starfleet Federation just yet, but there is no doubting the unlimited potential of expanding a commercial economy into space.
The United States of American can no longer afford oil. We cannot survive with it anymore. We do not have a choice to make, there is only one option: stop using so much oil.
